Learning and Growing Together
Community grows in the everyday life of City School: praying for one another, working through a challenging assignment, cheering from the sidelines, and sharing discoveries on a field trip. In these moments, students learn what it means to belong to a community and contribute to it.
Small classes give teachers and students time to know one another. Relationships across grades, including through City Servants, help children look beyond their own classroom and practice caring for others. Students have opportunities to lead, receive help, and recognize the gifts each person brings.
Families are part of this life together, too. Through our prayer team, volunteering, and school gatherings, parents build relationships and support the children, teachers, and families who make up our community.
School Traditions & Family Life
Some of our most meaningful school memories come from the traditions we share. They bring families into school life and give students experiences to look forward to year after year.
Grandparents Day welcomes grandparents and special guests into our students’ world, offering time to worship together, visit classrooms, and share what children are learning.
Pastor Appreciation Lunch gives our students the opportunity to handwrite invitations to their pastors and children’s pastors, welcoming them to City School for chapel, lunch, and time together. Students love to share a little of their school day and get to know their pastors more personally. It’s a chance to thank the people who help nurture our children’s faith and celebrate the partnership between City School and our local churches.
The Character Block Ceremony recognizes the growth teachers see in each child. A wooden block bearing a character word and Scripture becomes a reminder of that child’s gifts and the ways God is at work in their life.
Shakespeare performance bring literature to life as 7th and 8th grade students take on challenging language, develop their characters, and work toward a shared performance. Families gather to celebrate the preparation and courage behind what happens onstage.
Family Camp is our annual schoolwide invitation to retreat to H-E-B Foundation Camps at their Headwaters site in Leakey, Texas. With no cell service, we settle into a different pace: hiking, swimming in the Frio River, and spending time together. Children play, families get to know one another, and friendships grow beyond the classroom. It’s a chance to enjoy God’s creation and the community we share.
Fun Run and Field Day make room for play, teamwork, fundraising, and time together. Whether families are getting to know one another or students are cheering on a teammate, these shared experiences deepen the relationships that carry into the school day.
Partnerships
City School values being part of a broader community that extends outside our school. We share resources with organizations around us that are doing God’s work.
As part of our servant-leadership program, City School partners with organizations for volunteer opportunities for our students. Our seventh and eighth grades volunteer at the Impact Now Dove Springs Food Pantry and Community First Village on a regular basis, serving and building relationships in our broader Austin area community.
